Description

Carbon Footprint Simulation Workshop: Modelling Pathways, Making Trade-Offs and Committing to Action

A team-based simulation in which every individual and collective choice translates into a measurable climate pathway

  • 0.5 days — 3.5 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Messages about climate change often produce paralysis rather than action. Most people sense that their own behaviour matters without knowing which choices truly move the needle, or where personal decisions end and collective ones begin. The discussion then stalls between individual guilt and the assumption that governments or large organisations will handle it.

This three-and-a-half-hour workshop is built around a simulation played in teams. Participants estimate their starting footprint, select actions round after round, vote on collective measures and watch the resulting pathway unfold. The session closes with written commitments.

Learning objectives

  • Estimate your individual carbon footprint based on your everyday habits
  • Assess the effect of individual actions on a reduction pathway
  • Distinguish levers that depend on personal choice from those requiring collective decisions
  • Weigh up several actions according to their cost and their impact
  • Formulate personal and professional commitments at the end of the simulation

What makes this programme different

The simulation is played in teams and displays the effect of each decision in real time
Individual levers and collective decisions are compared on the same pathway
The workshop closes with a written commitment chosen by each participant

Programme

1Starting point and individual footprint

Knowing where you stand

  • Components of a household carbon footprint
  • Transport, housing, food and consumer goods
  • Estimating your own starting profile
  • Comparing profiles within the group

2The collective simulation

Playing out the decades ahead

  • Rules of the game and sequence of rounds
  • Selecting individual actions and their cumulative effects
  • Collective measures put to a group vote
  • Reading the pathway obtained at the end of each round

3From the game to real action

Turning play into concrete decisions
