Description

Circular Economy: Diagnosing Flows, Building the Approach and Steering It

Turning circular intent into projects that stand up economically and can be measured over time

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Circular economy principles feature in the organisation's commitments but rarely move beyond statements of intent. Material and waste flows are poorly documented, reuse initiatives rely on a handful of volunteers, and eco-design projects come up against procurement and production constraints. Without quantified volumes, trade-offs are made with no economic reference points.

These two days provide an end-to-end method. Participants position the levers across a product life cycle, map their actual flows, identify the value available through reuse and extended product life, then build a roadmap supported by monitoring indicators.

Learning objectives

  • Position circular economy levers across a product life cycle
  • Map the material and waste flows of your organisation
  • Identify the value available through reuse and repair
  • Assess the economic feasibility of a material loop
  • Structure a circular roadmap supported by monitoring indicators

What makes this programme different

A flow map is built on the participants' actual operations
A material loop project is costed through to its profitability
Internal barriers are identified department by department alongside the corresponding levers

Programme

1Circularity Levers and Business Models

Being clear on the subject before starting

  • Reading a product life cycle and identifying action points
  • Sustainable sourcing and material substitution
  • Reuse, repair and extending useful life
  • Waste recovery and industrial symbiosis between local operators

2Flow Diagnosis

Measuring before deciding

  • Inventory of material inputs and waste outputs
  • Available internal data sources and their limitations
  • Identifying avoidable losses and rejects
  • Presenting the diagnosis in a usable format

3Eco-Design and Usage-Based Models

Acting upstream of waste

  • Eco-design principles applied to an existing product
  • Material choices and recyclability constraints
  • Models based on usage rather than outright sale
  • Engaging suppliers and buyers

4Roadmap and Performance Steering

Embedding the approach for the long term

  • Prioritising projects according to expected gain and feasibility
  • Economic assessment of a material loop
  • Selecting monitoring indicators and collecting data
  • Internal mobilisation and communicating results

Who is it for

CSR and sustainability managers, together with procurement, production, quality and engineering design managers involved in a circular economy initiative.
