Description

Climate Urgency: Understanding the Mechanisms, Measuring Your Impact and Taking Action

Moving from vague concern to reduction measures an organisation can genuinely sustain

  • 1 day — 7 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Climate has found its way onto executive agendas without everyone sharing the same reference points. Terms such as neutrality and offsetting circulate without an agreed definition. Action plans then narrow down to symbolic gestures while the structural trade-offs stay outside the discussion.

This one-day programme sets out the physical mechanisms of climate change and the orders of magnitude needed to reason soundly. It then shows how an organisation identifies its heaviest emission sources and separates the levers that genuinely shift the curve from those that amount to presentation. Each participant leaves with a prioritised list of actions.

Learning objectives

  • Explain the physical mechanisms of climate change in accurate terms
  • Distinguish mitigation from adaptation in corporate decision-making
  • Identify the main emission sources within your operating scope
  • Prioritise reduction levers according to their effect and feasibility
  • Respond to the most common objections and misconceptions

What makes this programme different

Orders of magnitude are worked through until they become reference points you can use in a meeting
A full session is devoted to the objections actually heard inside organisations
The day closes with a list of actions ranked by expected effect within each participant's scope

Programme

1Understanding climate change

From mechanisms to orders of magnitude

  • The greenhouse effect and the role of the different gases
  • Reading scientific work and understanding levels of uncertainty
  • Orders of magnitude of emissions across major uses
  • The distinction between mitigation and adaptation

2Translating the subject into your organisation

Identifying your emission sources

  • Operating scope and direct and indirect emission sources
  • Reading an emissions inventory already completed
  • Value chain and energy dependencies
  • Effects of climate on operations and initial physical risks

3Moving to action

Choosing levers you can sustain

  • Demand-reduction and efficiency levers on day-to-day uses
  • Procurement and supplier selection
  • Limits of offsetting and precautions in communication
  • Responding to objections and mobilising teams

Who is it for

Employees and managers from any sector who want solid reference points on climate matters, as well as members of newly formed sustainability working groups.
