Description

Delivering Training: Designing the Session, Driving Participation and Assessing Learning

Passing on your professional expertise to working adults without turning the session into a lecture

  • 5 days — 35 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • All levels
  • Up to 6 participants

The expert appointed as trainer knows how to do the job, but passing it on is a different discipline. Content overruns the allotted time, the group mixes newcomers with long-serving staff, exercises fall flat and a single unexpected question is enough to unsettle the delivery. Assessment is too often reduced to a closing round of comments.

Five days to build a genuine delivery practice: writing observable objectives, producing a timed run sheet, selecting active methods, leading the group and managing difficult situations, assessing learning and securing transfer to the workplace. Every participant delivers in front of the group and leaves with a complete run sheet.

Learning objectives

  • Write observable learning objectives
  • Build a session run sheet alternating input and practice
  • Select methods suited to the group and the content
  • Lead a group of adult learners and manage difficult situations
  • Assess learning and gather participant feedback
  • Adapt a session to the virtual classroom format

What makes this programme different

Each participant delivers two real sessions in front of the group
Deliveries are recorded and reviewed against criteria announced in advance
A complete training run sheet is produced and taken away at the end of the programme

Programme

1Adult Learning and Objectives

Starting from what the participant must be able to do

  • Identify what helps or hinders learning in adults
  • Write observable learning objectives
  • Analyse needs and the group's entry level
  • Distinguish between information, training and practice

2Designing the Session

Building a run sheet that holds up

  • Break content down into progressive sessions
  • Alternate input, demonstration and practice
  • Calibrate timings and plan alternative options
  • Prepare materials and equipment

3Methods and Activities

Getting people to work rather than listen

  • Choose between case study, role play and sub-group work
  • Design an exercise that genuinely produces learning
  • Use questioning to draw output from the group
  • Manage mixed levels within the group

4Delivery and Group Management

Holding the group and holding the line

  • Open the session and set the working ground rules
  • Manage your pace, voice and movement
  • Handle objections and disengaged participants
  • Respond to a question you do not have the answer to
  • Refocus the group without breaking the dynamic

5Assessment and Transfer

Checking what has actually been learned

  • Build an assessment of learning aligned with the objectives
  • Organise application on the job
  • Gather and act on participant feedback
  • Adapt the session to the virtual classroom format
  • Refine your run sheet after each session
