Description

Driving the QHSE Approach Day to Day: Engage | Embed | Sustain

Bringing quality, health, safety and environment to life in the daily routines of your teams

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

The QHSE approach exists on paper: written procedures, monitored indicators, certifications obtained. On the ground, instructions are bypassed as soon as output pressure rises, incident reporting dries up and the QHSE coordinator is seen as the person who makes the work heavier. Quality meetings empty out and action plans are closed without any visible effect.

Two days devoted to field-level engagement: short rituals, presence at the workstation, rapid handling of reports and recognition of teams. Participants practise on tense situations and build the engagement calendar for their own area of responsibility.

Learning objectives

  • Build a QHSE engagement calendar aligned with the working rhythm of the teams
  • Run a short field ritual that triggers immediate actions
  • Revive incident reporting and ensure feedback returns to those who reported
  • Handle objections and resistance encountered at the workstation
  • Measure the ownership of rules by means other than the number of meetings held

What makes this programme different

Difficult field situations are brought by participants and replayed in session
Each participant leaves with the engagement calendar for their own area of responsibility
The rituals proposed are calibrated to fit within the production time actually available

Programme

1Why Rules Do Not Hold

Understanding the gap between work as prescribed and work as done

  • Spot workarounds and what they reveal about the organisation
  • Distinguish between error, violation and necessary adaptation
  • Listen to the real constraints of the workstation before restating the instruction
  • Identify the signals of team disengagement

2Engagement Rituals

Short meetings that produce decisions

  • Select the useful rituals according to the rhythm of the activity
  • Prepare a daily few-minute briefing at the workstation
  • Maintain a live display board that everyone can understand
  • Escalate unresolved issues to the next level
  • Build the engagement calendar for your area of responsibility

3Engaging People on the Ground

Talking about the work rather than the procedure

  • Conduct a field walk centred on observation
  • Address a deviation without calling the person into question
  • Handle the recurring objections raised by operators
  • Secure a concrete commitment at the end of the conversation
  • Recognise the behaviours expected

4Sustaining the Momentum

Making it last beyond the first few months

  • Revive incident reporting and close the loop with a response
  • Make the actions arising from reports visible
  • Track ownership through field-level indicators
  • Involve frontline supervisors in the engagement effort
  • Prepare the handover should the coordinator change

Who is it for

QHSE coordinators and officers, quality or HSE managers and frontline supervisors responsible for ensuring rules are applied on the ground.

Prerequisites

Hold a quality, health, safety or environment coordination responsibility or manage an operational team.
