Description

Embedding AI into an Application Landscape: Design, Expose and Industrialise

Connecting artificial intelligence models to an existing system without degrading its operation

  • 1 day — 7 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Expert
  • Up to 6 participants

Adding an artificial intelligence capability to an existing application raises questions that demonstrations ignore: where to call the model, how to handle a non-deterministic response, what to do when the remote service slows down, and how to retain control over the data being sent. Early integrations work, then deteriorate in production.

A one-day programme for architects and experienced developers that treats integration as an architecture topic: component placement, interface contracts, error and timeout handling, response evaluation and control of call costs. All examples are drawn from systems already running in production.

Learning objectives

  • Position the artificial intelligence component within the existing application architecture
  • Define interface contracts suited to non-deterministic responses
  • Implement error handling, timeouts and retry strategies
  • Organise continuous evaluation of response quality in production
  • Control the data sent to the provider and the cost of calls

What makes this programme different

An architecture diagram produced by each participant for their own system
Explicit treatment of degraded modes when the model is unavailable
A review of integration pitfalls observed during go-live phases

Programme

1Placement within the architecture

Deciding where the component lives

  • Synchronous calls or asynchronous processing
  • Position relative to existing business services
  • Context handling and input data
  • Isolating the provider behind an internal interface

2Robustness and operations

Withstanding load and incidents

  • Timeouts and retry strategies
  • Degraded modes in the event of unavailability
  • Logging of calls and responses
  • Managing consumption and costs

3Quality and data control

Keeping control of inputs and outputs

  • Evaluation datasets and measurement of response quality
  • Detecting drift after go-live
  • Filtering the data sent to the provider
  • Traceability of model and prompt versions

Who is it for

Software architects, experienced developers and technical leads responsible for applications in production.

Prerequisites

Experience in designing or developing distributed applications.
