Description

Energy Consumption and Procurement: Monitoring Usage, Contracting and Trade-Offs

Connecting consumption monitoring with supply strategy to bring energy spend under control

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

The energy bill is determined in two places: in how the site actually consumes, and in the contracts that have been signed. Many organisations optimise one while ignoring the other, renew supply agreements under time pressure without a reliable load profile, and later discover contracted capacity mismatches or poorly valued cost components.

Two days to connect both sides: load profile analysis, invoice verification, the structure of supply offers, negotiation, and the trade-off between buying better and consuming less. This session focuses on procurement and complements the programmes dedicated to organising the energy function.

Learning objectives

  • Build a site load profile from the data available
  • Verify an energy invoice and identify poorly adjusted cost components
  • Break down a supply offer and compare proposals on a consistent basis
  • Select a supply strategy suited to the load profile and to risk tolerance
  • Balance action on consumption patterns against contract negotiation

What makes this programme different

Participants analyse their own invoices and identify contracted capacity mismatches
Three supply offers are compared using a common assessment grid built during the session
A renewal negotiation is role-played under calendar pressure

Programme

1Knowing Your Load Profile

Buying well requires knowing how you consume

  • Rebuilding the consumption profile from meter readings
  • Contracted capacity
  • demand peaks and seasonality
  • Breakdown across time bands and tariff periods
  • Quality of available data and additional information to obtain

2Reading and Verifying Invoices

Checking what you pay for line by line

  • Invoice structure and the nature of each component
  • Supply charges
  • network charges and levies
  • The most frequently encountered errors and anomalies
  • Budget monitoring and variances between forecast and actual
  • Raising and pursuing a claim with the supplier

3Understanding Supply Offers

Comparing without being led by the headline price alone

  • Fixed
  • indexed and hybrid pricing structures
  • Price fixing mechanisms and decision windows
  • Contractual clauses and volume commitments
  • Certificates of origin and offers with environmental attributes
  • Building a consistent comparison grid

4Negotiating and Making Trade-Offs

Deciding between buying better and consuming less

  • Preparing the tender file and the timetable
  • Conducting the negotiation and identifying what is genuinely negotiable
  • Allocation of risk between supplier and customer
  • Weighing contractual savings against savings on consumption
  • Contract monitoring and review milestones
