Description

Fire and Life Safety: Classifying Buildings, Organising Safety and Preparing for Inspections

Meet your fire and life safety obligations without waiting for an inspection to reveal the gaps

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Whoever operates a building open to the public usually inherits a situation they did not create. The building's occupancy classification is unclear, the safety register is kept irregularly, periodic inspections depend on maintenance contracts that are poorly monitored, and evacuation instructions remain theoretical. Requirements issued after a previous inspection have sometimes never been closed out.

These two days bring order back to day-to-day operations. Participants learn to determine which regime applies to their building, to read its fire protection and life safety provisions, to maintain the safety register and the record of periodic inspections, then to prepare for an authority inspection and manage the requirements received.

Learning objectives

  • Determine the occupancy type and category of a building open to the public
  • Identify the operating obligations attached to the building's classification
  • Maintain a safety register and track periodic inspections
  • Organise evacuation arrangements and staff training on emergency instructions
  • Prepare for an authority inspection and manage the requirements received

What makes this programme different

Real buildings brought by participants are classified during the session
A safety register is audited section by section to identify gaps
An authority inspection is simulated with the questions typically put to the operator
