Description

Fixed Assets: Recording, Depreciating and Completing Asset Schedules

Record fixed asset additions and disposals, then carry the figures into the annual asset and depreciation schedules

  • 0.43 days — 3 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Fixed asset and depreciation schedules are often completed at year-end by rolling forward the prior year. Disposals that are not fully cleared, forgotten components and acquisitions expensed in error create differences that only surface during the review. Reconciling with the trial balance then takes longer than the posting itself.

Three hours to work through the full life cycle of an asset, from the purchase invoice to derecognition, then to build the asset and depreciation schedules directly from the ledger. The focus is on the entries themselves and on reconciliation with the trial balance; formalising internal procedures is covered in a separate workshop.

Learning objectives

  • Determine the initial cost of an asset acquired or internally produced
  • Post the acquisition and commissioning entries
  • Calculate and record depreciation on a component basis
  • Clear a disposal or a write-off from the books
  • Build the fixed asset and depreciation schedules for annual reporting
  • Reconcile these schedules with the general trial balance

What makes this programme different

The full asset life cycle is covered entry by entry on a single asset
A reconciliation between the trial balance and the reporting schedules is carried out in session
Participants leave with a ready-to-use fixed asset register template
