Description

Foreign Currency Accounting: Recording, Revaluing and Justifying FX Results

Manage a bank's foreign currency transactions and be able to explain the foreign exchange result

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Foreign currency transactions raise two distinct difficulties: translating correctly on initial recognition and revaluing at each reporting date. When the currency position is not tracked account by account, the result becomes impossible to explain and the counter-value accounts can no longer be substantiated.

This short programme covers the multi-currency accounting organisation of a banking institution: recording at trade date, position and counter-value accounts, revaluation at closing rates, and the treatment of forward foreign exchange and swaps. Unlike a module on hedging, it focuses on bookkeeping and on substantiating the foreign exchange result.

Learning objectives

  • Organise multi-currency accounting and its position accounts
  • Record a spot foreign exchange transaction and its settlement
  • Revalue foreign exchange positions at closing rates
  • Handle forward foreign exchange transactions together with premiums and discounts
  • Substantiate the foreign exchange result and counter-value balances
