Description

Hybrid Project Management: Combining Milestones, Cadence and Trade-Offs

Two days to build a delivery model that combines contractual milestones with iterative delivery

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Few projects are entirely predictive or entirely agile. Teams work in iterations while executive sponsors expect dated milestones and a committed budget. Without explicit rules, everyone improvises an unstable mix: agile rituals without real autonomy, or a frozen schedule that the iterations keep contradicting.

These fourteen hours are designed for practitioners who already know both approaches. The focus is on the assembly itself: distinguishing what belongs to predictive and adaptive delivery, aligning cadences, reconciling indicators and maintaining a single governance model. Agile fundamentals are not revisited.

Learning objectives

  • Assess the level of uncertainty in each work package of a project
  • Allocate work packages between predictive and adaptive delivery
  • Align iteration cadences with contractual milestones
  • Reconcile progress indicators produced by both approaches
  • Define the governance and decision rules of the hybrid model

What makes this programme different

The work focuses on combining the two approaches rather than on their fundamentals
A complete hybrid delivery model is designed and then stress-tested against disruptions
The decision rules produced are formalised in a working charter

Programme

1Project Diagnosis

Identifying what can be fixed

  • Analysing uncertainty in requirements and in the solution
  • Contractual and regulatory constraints
  • Maturity of the teams and of the organisation
  • Selecting the approach work package by work package

2Architecture of the Hybrid Model

Making two logics work together

  • Breakdown into predictive and adaptive work packages
  • Interfaces and dependencies between work packages
  • Aligning cadences and milestones
  • Roles and responsibilities within the model

3Steering and Indicators

Measuring without duplicating reporting

  • Predictive indicators and flow indicators
  • Consolidating a credible overall progress view
  • Re-forecasting from iteration feedback
  • Communicating to a traditional steering committee

4Governance and Trade-Offs

Deciding when the two logics conflict

  • Decision bodies and decision rhythm
  • Handling a change request raised mid-iteration
  • Trade-offs between scope schedule and budget
  • Working charter for the delivery model

Who is it for

Experienced project managers, programme managers, project management office leads and those supporting mixed delivery teams.
