Description

IFRS 17: Measuring Insurance Contracts, Selecting the Model and Presenting the Accounts

Master the measurement mechanics of insurance contracts and how they translate into the financial statements

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Expert
  • Up to 6 participants

IFRS 17 has fundamentally changed the way insurance accounts are read. Profit no longer emerges as premiums are collected but as the service is delivered. Cash flows must be remeasured at each reporting date and a contractual service margin tracked for each group of contracts using data sets that were never designed to work together.

These two days are intended for professionals already working with the standard. Participants define the scope and the grouping of contracts and then work through the measurement components of the general model. They identify the approaches applicable to short-duration and participating contracts and connect this work to the presentation of the financial statements.

Learning objectives

  • Define the scope of contracts falling within the standard
  • Build groups of contracts and apply the aggregation requirements
  • Determine the measurement components of the general model
  • Track the contractual service margin and its release over time
  • Identify situations calling for the simplified approach or for participating contracts
  • Present the insurance service result and the required disclosures

What makes this programme different

The measurement building blocks are calculated step by step on one group of contracts followed from inception to run-off
Closing entries are reconstructed from actuarial data
An income statement presentation is compared before and after application of the standard
