Description

IS Architecture: Mapping, Designing and Governing the Information System

Give the information system a clear architecture that withstands shifts in direction

  • 1 day — 7 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Expert
  • Up to 6 participants

Information systems accumulate redundant applications, interfaces built case by case and technical debt that is never addressed. Each project adds a component without an overall view: integration costs rise and a simple business change takes months. Architecture is precisely about making these choices explicit and open to arbitration.

This one-day programme works through an enterprise architecture approach, from mapping to governance bodies. Participants work on a real system and leave with a phased transformation roadmap.

Learning objectives

  • Map the information system across its business, functional, application and technical layers
  • Formalise architecture principles that projects must comply with
  • Decide between interface-based integration and service-oriented architecture
  • Assess technical debt and build a transformation roadmap
  • Set up the bodies and deliverables required for architecture governance

What makes this programme different

The mapping exercise is built from a real information system brought to the session
Architecture principles are tested against deliberately contradictory project requests
The resulting roadmap separates what must be decided now from what can wait

Programme

1Mapping and Architecture Reference Points

See the system before transforming it

  • Business, functional, application and technical layers
  • Enterprise architecture frameworks and a realistic level of use
  • Inventory of applications, flows and reference data
  • Identification of redundancies and points of fragility

2Design Choices and Integration

Weighing up the options

  • Breakdown into services and definition of functional domains
  • Integration through interfaces, a service bus or events
  • Reference data governance and quality of exchanges
  • In-house or outsourced hosting and the effects on design
  • Security and availability requirements in architecture choices

3Governance and Roadmap

Making choices hold over time

  • Formalising architecture principles and managing exemptions
  • Architecture committee and alignment with the project portfolio
  • Measuring technical debt and prioritising its reduction
  • Phased roadmap and monitoring indicators

Who is it for

Enterprise architects, information system planners, IT directors, application managers and technical project managers.

Prerequisites
