Description

Job Evaluation: Describing Roles, Weighting Criteria and Grading

Objectify the relative weight of roles and build a grading structure you can defend in front of employees

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Without a shared job evaluation method, the hierarchy of roles rests on history and on each individual's ability to negotiate. Regrading requests pile up, pay differences become difficult to explain, and comparisons between departments do not hold up when an attentive employee examines them.

Two days to build a complete job evaluation approach, from role descriptions through to the final grading structure. Participants evaluate several real roles and then compare their results to test how robust the method truly is.

Learning objectives

  • Describe a role based on its activities and its requirements
  • Select job evaluation criteria suited to the organisation
  • Weight the criteria and build the evaluation scale
  • Evaluate a set of roles and check the consistency of the results
  • Build a grading structure from the evaluation scores
  • Explain a grading decision to an employee

What makes this programme different

The roles evaluated are brought by participants and worked through to final positioning
Evaluations are carried out twice and then compared to measure the gaps
One sequence is devoted to regrading requests and how to handle them

Programme

1Describing Roles

Evaluation starts with description

  • Distinguish the position
  • the role
  • and the jobholder
  • Gather information from line managers
  • Write a description that can actually be used for evaluation
  • Handle roles with unclear boundaries

2Criteria and Weighting

Building a framework that holds up

  • Select a set of criteria covering all roles
  • Define the levels within each criterion
  • Weight the criteria according to organisational priorities
  • Check the framework for bias

3Scoring and Consistency of Results

Comparing what is comparable

  • Score a role criterion by criterion
  • Compare evaluations carried out independently
  • Resolve scoring gaps between evaluators
  • Check the overall consistency of the results

4Grading Structure and Roll-Out

From score to grade

  • Build the grades from the evaluation scores
  • Align the grading structure with the pay structure
  • Handle a regrading request
  • Organise the ongoing maintenance of the framework
