Description

LLMs and Document Analysis: Framing, Extracting and Verifying

Have your contracts, reports and minutes read by a large language model without losing control of the output

  • 0.43 days — 3 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Teams are buried in documents: tenders, audit reports, meeting minutes, supplier contracts. Early attempts with a language model produce plausible summaries that cannot be verified, and no one knows which part of the document was actually read.

Two hours to establish a working method: preparing the corpus, writing instructions that require the source passage to be quoted, comparing the answers obtained and spotting the cases where the model extrapolates. This short format is designed for immediate use on the documents each participant brings along.

Learning objectives

  • Prepare a document corpus that a language model can work with
  • Write extraction instructions that require the source passage to be quoted
  • Compare several query formulations on the same document
  • Identify extrapolated answers before any distribution
  • Organise a human review proportionate to the stakes of the document

What makes this programme different

Work carried out on the documents participants actually bring
A checklist for verifying the answers produced by the model
Extraction instructions that can be reused as they stand after the session

Programme

1Framing the document request

Knowing what you are looking for

  • Typology of document analysis tasks
  • Selecting the useful document rather than the entire corpus
  • Prior splitting and cleaning of files
  • Limits linked to context window size

2Writing instructions that hold up

Precision before length

  • Field-by-field extraction instructions
  • Requiring the source passage to be quoted
  • Imposing an output format on the model
  • Progressive rewording when the answer remains vague

3Verifying before distributing

The review stays human

  • Targeted rereading of the quoted passages
  • Spotting statements with no support in the text
  • Traceability of queries and versions
  • Confidentiality rules for sensitive documents

Who is it for

Data analysts and research officers, and anyone handling large volumes of business documents.
