Description

Management Practices: Diagnose Your Habits, Identify Your Gaps and Progress

Two days to look squarely at your management practices and decide what you will change

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

After several years in a management role, habits have taken hold. Some work well and others carry a real cost that no one mentions. Feedback from the team stays polite and the annual review with your own line manager tends to focus mainly on results.

These two days are built around diagnosis. You will compare your self-assessment with observations from the group, then identify the gaps between your intentions and your actual practices. The session closes with a development plan deliberately limited to a small number of behaviours.

Learning objectives

  • Assess your management practices using a structured observation framework
  • Compare your self-assessment with perceptions expressed by peers
  • Identify the gaps between your management intentions and your actions
  • Prioritise two or three behaviours to change
  • Build a development plan supported by observable indicators

What makes this programme different

A self-assessment tested against structured feedback from peer managers
Work based on situations the participant believes they handled poorly
A development plan deliberately limited to three behaviours

Programme

1Mapping Your Practices

What a manager actually does in an ordinary week

  • Inventory of your real management activities
  • How your time is split between steering, relationships and delivery
  • Self-assessment framework completed individually
  • First observations shared in sub-groups

2Testing Your Perception Against That of Others

What the team sees and does not say

  • Gaps between stated intention and perceived behaviour
  • Gathering structured feedback between peers
  • Analysis of a situation you believe you handled poorly
  • Identifying your default reflexes under pressure

3Understanding What Blocks Change

Habits exist for good reasons

  • Hidden benefits of the practices you wish to abandon
  • Distinguishing organisational constraints from genuine room for manoeuvre
  • Management beliefs that hold back change
  • Selecting your development priorities

4Building Your Development Plan

Few objectives, but ones you keep

  • Framing observable behaviours to be changed
  • Choosing the situations in which to practise immediately on return
  • Indicators and review points
  • Sources of support to mobilise in your environment
