Description

Managing a Project Team: Mobilising Temporary Contributors

Building a team with people who report elsewhere, over a limited period and against demanding objectives

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

A project team forms quickly, works under constraint and then disbands. The usual mechanisms that build cohesion have no time to take hold: they must be deliberately created.

Two days to structure the kick-off, lead the team throughout the project and address the tensions inherent in matrix working.

Learning objectives

  • Build the project team and clarify each person's role
  • Deliver a successful kick-off and set the ground rules
  • Lead the team and sustain engagement over time
  • Arbitrate priority conflicts with line management
  • Address internal tensions and close the project properly

What makes this programme different

Work applied to each participant's live project
Kick-off and tracking tools that can be reused immediately
Practice in arbitrating priorities with line managers

Programme

1Building and Launching the Team

The kick-off shapes everything that follows

  • Identify the skills required and negotiate for contributors
  • Clarify roles, responsibilities and decision-making levels
  • Kick-off meeting: objectives, framework, ground rules
  • Create the conditions for trust quickly

2Leading Day to Day

Maintaining the pace without exhausting the team

  • Tracking rituals: format, frequency, participants
  • Make progress and blockers visible
  • Sustain the engagement of contributors who are in demand elsewhere
  • Recognise contributions without holding appraisal authority

3Addressing Tensions

Priority conflict is structural

  • Priority conflicts between the project and day-to-day activity
  • Gradual disengagement of a contributor
  • Interpersonal tensions and rivalries between experts
  • Escalating to line management: when and how

4Closing and Capitalising

What the ending leaves behind

  • Project review: results, variances, lessons learned
  • Useful lessons-learned sessions rather than a formal ritual
  • Highlight contributions to line managers
  • Support the team as it disperses

Who is it for

Project managers · project team leaders · managers of temporary or multidisciplinary teams.
