Description

PowerPoint — Visual Presentations: Structuring Your Message, Illustrating It and Convincing

Conveying one idea per slide instead of projecting written documents meant to be read

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

The slide is used as a working document. The text is written out in full and then read aloud. Charts include every figure available. The audience reads instead of listening and retains very little. The presentation drags on and the expected decision is ultimately not taken.

These 14 hours focus on designing the message and translating it visually rather than on software techniques. Participants structure their content into a clear narrative thread and then build slides that carry one idea at a time. They work on layout, typography, colour and chart readability using a real presentation of their own.

Learning objectives

  • Express the main message of a presentation in a single sentence
  • Build a narrative thread that leads to the expected decision
  • Reduce a slide to one idea and the elements that support it
  • Select the chart that makes data immediately readable
  • Apply rules of layout, typography and colour
  • Adapt the material to the speaking time and the delivery mode

What makes this programme different

Each participant reworks a presentation they actually have to deliver
Slides are projected and then judged on what the audience retains immediately
A before-and-after comparison is produced for each reworked deck

Programme

1Message and Narrative Thread

Decide before you design

  • Expressing the main message in a single sentence
  • Analysing the audience and the expected decision
  • Building an outline in sequences
  • Deciding what is said and what is shown

2One Idea per Slide

Simplify without losing substance

  • Reducing text to what is strictly necessary
  • Titles that state the idea rather than the topic
  • Separating the projected deck from the handout
  • Pace and progression within a sequence

3Layout, Colour and Typography

Guide the eye within seconds

  • Grid, margins and alignment
  • Typographic hierarchy and sizes readable across the room
  • Using colour to signal rather than to decorate
  • Selecting and treating images

4Making Figures Readable

A chart carries a conclusion

  • Choosing the chart type according to the intended comparison
  • Removing elements that disrupt readability
  • Highlighting the value that carries the message
  • Aligning spoken commentary with the visual
