Description

Presentation Skills for Management Controllers: Structure, Visualise and Convince

Getting a management message across in a few minutes to operational teams under constant time pressure

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

The management controller has the figures but rarely has the attention of the room. Presentations run through dense tables, the message is diluted and the audience mainly remembers the colour of the variances. The expected decisions are postponed and the analytical work has no effect on the business.

These two days work simultaneously on the structure of the message and on the design of the supporting materials. Participants learn to prioritise information, to select the chart that matches what the data must demonstrate and to hold their ground when facing objections. Each participant reworks a real presentation and delivers it in front of the group.

Learning objectives

  • Identify what the audience genuinely expects and the message they must retain
  • Structure a short intervention around one governing idea
  • Select the chart that matches what the data must demonstrate
  • Build readable materials stripped of secondary elements
  • Deliver the presentation and handle objections from operational teams

What makes this programme different

Each participant reworks a real presentation that they will actually have to deliver
Materials are rebuilt during the session and compared with their initial version
Filmed sequences provide the basis for individual feedback on posture and pace

Programme

1Message and audience

Knowing what you want from the room

  • Analysis of the audience's expectations and level of knowledge
  • Formulating the governing idea and the decision being sought
  • Prioritising information and deciding what will be left out
  • Adapting the message for an executive committee or an operational team

2Structure of the intervention

Giving the listener a clear path

  • Useful structures for presenting a variance a result or a trade-off
  • Building an opening that frames the stake in a few sentences
  • Sequencing of sections and explicit transitions
  • Formulating the conclusion and the actions requested
  • Managing the time allocated and unplanned interruptions

3Materials and data visualisation

Showing the data without drowning the message

  • Choosing the chart according to the comparison distribution or trend to be shown
  • Simplifying tables and highlighting the information that matters
  • Restrained use of colour and readability in the room and on screen
  • Slide titles written as conclusions
  • Articulation between the projected deck and the detailed document handed out

4Delivery and objections

Holding your ground with people who challenge you

  • Voice pace and eye contact during a short intervention
  • Managing nerves and the first few minutes
  • Responding to objections about the reliability of the figures
  • Handling an operational manager who challenges the calculation method
  • Steering the discussion towards the expected decision
