Process Engineering and Methods: Designing, Validating and Documenting

Design a manufacturing process and document it so that it is genuinely applied on the shop floor

Between product definition and series production lies process design. When this stage is rushed, the shop floor receives incomplete instructions, approximate tooling and cycle times that nobody can meet. The resulting gaps are then handled in emergency mode, workstation by workstation, without ever returning to the root cause.

Two days focused on process design and its technical documentation. Unlike a longer programme devoted to industrial methods, this session covers neither plant layout nor detailed time measurement: it concentrates on process selection, definition of the required resources and the construction of manufacturing documents.

  • Analyse a definition drawing and its specifications
  • Identify the requirements that constrain manufacturing
  • Engage with the design office on the difficult points
  • Quantify the impact of a requirement on manufacturing cost

2Designing the process

From the process route to the resources

  • Compare the possible processes for a single part
  • Break the process down into operations and workstations
  • Define the tooling and inspection means required
  • Assess the investment and the resulting capacity

3Documenting the work

Instructions that can actually be used

  • Structure the routing sheet and workstation instructions
  • Write an instruction that is understandable without verbal explanation
  • Incorporate inspection points and acceptance criteria
  • Manage revision levels and document distribution

4Building reliability before launch

Finding the defects on paper

  • Identify process failure modes and their effects
  • Prioritise risks and decide on corrective actions
  • Define the production control plan
  • Prepare pre-series trials and the criteria for release to series production

A working technical understanding of industrial manufacturing.

Before the programme
Online positioning questionnaire. Your development objectives are shared with the trainer, who tailors the practical case studies to your context.
Teaching methods
Theoretical input, workshops and practical case studies. Digital course materials and method sheets provided.
Assessment
Multiple-choice tests and role-play exercises. Assessment of learning at the start and end of the programme, with immediate and 60-day follow-up evaluations.
After the programme
One year of access to the e-learning platform. Self-assessment of the skills acquired and a 30-day follow-up session with your trainer.
