Description

Public Speaking: Structuring Your Message, Building Arguments and Winning Support

One hour to defend an idea aloud with a clear message and arguments that withstand challenge

  • 0.14 days — 1 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • All levels
  • Up to 6 participants

In meetings the idea is sound but it lands poorly. The speaker opens with context and then drifts into detail. The audience disengages before the essential point and the first objection is enough to send the discussion off course. The decision is then taken on the best-presented proposal rather than the best-constructed one.

One hour online to structure a short and convincing spoken contribution. You learn to state your message within the opening seconds, to rank two or three solid arguments and to answer an objection without losing your thread. Every participant speaks and receives precise feedback on their structure and on the effect they create.

Learning objectives

  • State your main message from the very opening of your contribution
  • Select two or three arguments matched to the expectations of your audience
  • Answer an objection without abandoning your line of argument
  • Close with an explicit request addressed to your audience

What makes this programme different

Every participant speaks and receives individual feedback within the hour
The work is based on a proposal you genuinely need to defend
Real objections voiced by the group to test the strength of your arguments

Programme

1Setting out your message

The first thirty seconds

  • Formulating the main message in a single sentence
  • What the audience must remember, decide or do
  • An opening that captures attention without a detour through context
  • The realistic length of an effective contribution

2Building your argument

Two or three solid pillars

  • Selecting arguments according to the interests of the audience
  • Supporting each point with a fact, an example or a concrete consequence
  • Sequencing arguments from the strongest to the most secondary
  • Formulating the closing request

3Holding your ground under objection

Keeping the thread and the relationship

  • Acknowledging the objection before any answer
  • Distinguishing a substantive objection from a signal of disagreement
  • A short answer followed by a return to the main message
  • Posture and voice in moments of tension

Who is it for

Team members, project managers and managers who need to defend a proposal in a meeting or before a committee.
