Description

Speed Reading: Read Faster, Filter What Matters and Retain the Essentials

Handle the growing pile of reports and documents without spending every evening on it

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Reports, memos and studies accumulate faster than anyone can read them. You re-read the same lines, go back over paragraphs, and finish a document without being able to state its key points. Reading happens at one single pace, whether the text needs detailed study or only three pieces of information.

Two days to identify the habits that slow you down, train your eye and your rhythm, select a reading mode according to your objective and retain what counts. Each participant measures their speed and comprehension at the start and at several stages of the programme.

Learning objectives

  • Measure your reading speed and level of comprehension
  • Identify and correct the habits that slow reading down
  • Select a reading mode suited to the purpose of the document
  • Scan a long document to extract the useful information
  • Retain the essentials of what you read and report it back

What makes this programme different

Repeated speed and comprehension measurements throughout the two days
Practice sessions run on your own business documents
A personal training plan for the weeks that follow

Programme

1How We Read

Identifying what slows you down

  • Initial measurement of speed and comprehension
  • Inner pronunciation, regressions and eye fixations
  • Physical conditions: screen, paper, lighting and posture
  • The effect of fatigue and attention on pace

2Reading Faster

Training the eye and the rhythm

  • Widening the portion of text captured in a single glance
  • Using a visual guide to maintain pace
  • Eliminating automatic regressions
  • Adjusting your speed to the difficulty of the text

3Reading According to Your Objective

Not everything is read the same way

  • Scanning, skimming and in-depth reading
  • Deciding beforehand what you are looking for in a document
  • Using structure: headings, executive summary, introduction and conclusion
  • Working through a long report and then a stack of emails

4Retaining and Using What You Read

Reading fast must serve a purpose

  • Minimal note-taking while reading
  • Reformulating immediately what has just been read
  • Organising what you keep so you can find it again
  • Building your personal training plan

Who is it for

Managers, research and analysis staff, legal professionals and anyone who has to process a high volume of business documents
