Description
Structuring Your Data: Organising Tables, Cleaning and Preparing for Analysis
Bring order to your files so that analyses stop breaking with every update
- 0.43 days — 3 h
- In-person or virtual
- Foundation
- Up to 6 participants
Working files often combine multi-row headers, merged cells, subtotals inserted mid-table and inconsistent date formats. Every analysis then calls for manual cleaning that has to be repeated at the next refresh, and two people rarely obtain the same result from the same file.
This short virtual format goes straight to the point. Participants discover the rules of an analysis-ready table, learn to spot and correct the most common structural defects, then organise their data so that cleaning no longer has to be redone with each update.
Learning objectives
- Distinguish a presentation table from an analysis-ready table
- Identify the structural defects that block an analysis
- Standardise labels and formats within a single column
- Convert a cross-tabulated table into an analysis-ready table
- Document data entry rules to avoid rekeying
