Description
Website Eco-Design: Measure, Lighten and Build Leaner Sites
Reduce a website's footprint without sacrificing commercial performance or browsing comfort
- 2 days — 14 h
- In-person or virtual
- Foundation
- Up to 6 participants
Websites grow heavier with every redesign: stacked measurement scripts, uncompressed images, decorative animations, content that loads but is never read. The issue surfaces when management asks for a review of the organisation's digital footprint, when loading times start to damage search rankings, or when teams have no basis for arbitrating between design ambition and restraint.
Two days to establish a method that applies equally to an existing site and a new project: measure the current state, prioritise genuinely useful features, lighten media and code, then track the effects. Each participant works on their own website and leaves with a prioritised reduction plan.
Learning objectives
- Measure the page weight and number of requests of a site's main pages
- Prioritise features according to actual usage and technical cost
- Lighten media and fonts without degrading readability
- Write eco-design specifications that can be built into a project brief
- Track the effects of optimisations on loading times and search visibility
What makes this programme different
Programme
1Understanding a website's footprint
From the displayed page to the resources it mobilises
- Break down impact across device, network and server
- Identify what makes a page heavy
- Distinguish digital sobriety from pure technical performance
- Position the topic within the organisation's CSR approach
2Measuring and diagnosing the current state
Start from figures before deciding
- Select a representative user journey to analyse
- Record page weight, requests and display times
- Spot third-party scripts and question their real usefulness
- Rank the gaps by effort required and gain expected
3Designing lean
Arbitrating features and design choices
- Challenge the usefulness of every feature
- Simplify journeys and reduce the number of screens
- Choose appropriate image formats and font strategies
- Limit animations and automatically loaded content
4Embedding and steering over time
Making the approach outlast the project
- Translate choices into requirements within the project brief
- Define simple tracking indicators
- Organise checks at each release
- Raise awareness among editorial contributors
