Description

Corporate Energy Manager: Structuring, Steering and Reducing Consumption

Embedding the energy function in the organisation and turning consumption data into action

  • 4 days — 28 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • All levels
  • Up to 6 participants

The energy function is often assigned to a technician who already carries other responsibilities, with utility invoices as the only source of information and actions decided case by case. Savings potential remains invisible for lack of sub-metering, and projects struggle to secure financial approval.

Four days to build the energy function end to end: mapping of energy uses, metering plan, data analysis, prioritisation of actions, business case development and internal engagement. This programme addresses the organisation of energy performance management and complements courses focused on procurement and contracts.

Learning objectives

  • Map the significant energy uses of a site and link them to operating activities
  • Design a metering plan aligned with the decisions to be taken
  • Analyse consumption data and build energy performance indicators
  • Prioritise reduction measures according to savings potential and feasibility
  • Build the business case for a project and defend it before senior management
  • Lead the energy function with operational teams and internal champions

What makes this programme different

Each participant builds the metering plan for their own site based on its actual installations
Data from a real site is analysed to identify drifts and baseload consumption
An investment case is prepared and then presented to a review committee role-played by the group

Programme

1Mapping Energy Uses

Knowing where energy goes before deciding what to do

  • Energy carriers and utilities present on a site
  • Identification of significant energy uses
  • Linking consumption to actual operating activity
  • Identifying baseload and non-production consumption

2Metering and Measurement

Producing the data needed to make decisions

  • Principles of a useful and proportionate metering plan
  • Selecting measurement points and parameters to monitor
  • One-off measurement campaigns and permanent instrumentation
  • Data reliability and handling of missing values

3Analysing and Monitoring

Turning meter readings into meaningful indicators

  • Building energy performance indicators
  • Normalisation against activity levels and climate conditions
  • Detecting drifts and analysing variances
  • Dashboard design and review frequency
  • Reporting to teams and decision-makers

4Building the Action Plan

Prioritising between settings, investment and behaviour

  • Operational and set-point actions requiring no investment
  • Technical actions on utilities and processes
  • Heat recovery and optimisation of demand
  • Quantifying expected savings and the associated uncertainty
  • Multi-year scheduling of selected actions

5Deciding and Engaging

Securing resources and sustaining the function

  • Building the business case for a project
  • Funding options and trade-offs with other investments
  • Presenting the case to senior management and tracking commitments
  • Raising team awareness and building on-site champions
  • Measurement and verification of savings after implementation
