Description
Facilitating In-Person and Virtual Classroom Sessions: Transposing, Framing and Re-Engaging
Two virtual days to deliver the same programme in two very different settings, without simply lifting and shifting it
- 2 days — 14 h
- In-person or virtual
- All levels
- Up to 6 participants
Many occasional trainers now deliver in both formats depending on the session. The instinctive reaction is to keep the same run sheet and simply change the room. What works in a classroom falls flat online: spontaneous exchanges disappear, breakout groups lose structure, and the trainer compensates by talking more.
These 14 hours, delivered entirely in a virtual classroom, focus on facilitation across both settings. Participants identify what stays the same and what must change. They learn to transpose an in-person sequence into a virtual classroom format, to write instructions that hold up without the trainer standing nearby, and to respond to the disruptions specific to each setting.
Learning objectives
- Distinguish facilitation practices that apply to any format from those that must be adapted
- Transpose a sequence designed for in-person delivery into a virtual classroom format
- Write working instructions that participants can act on without trainer intervention
- Organise interaction and group work in each of the two formats
- Respond to the technical and human disruptions specific to each setting
What makes this programme different
Programme
1Common ground across both formats
What does not change
- Clarity of objectives and of the overall storyline
- Alternating methods and managing time
- Space given to participants' contributions
- Regular checks on understanding
2What the virtual classroom imposes
Constraints and resources
- Attention and fatigue behind a screen
- Loss of non-verbal signals and what this means for the trainer
- Available interaction tools and the appropriate use of each
- Technical conditions to verify before starting
3Transposing a sequence
From classroom run sheet to on-screen run sheet
- Re-segmenting timings and breaking up long blocks
- Reworking instructions for online breakout group work
- Adapting slides and shared documents
- Adding checkpoints into the run sheet
4Interaction and the unexpected
Holding the group in both settings
- Ways to re-engage a silent group
- Handling a participant who dominates the discussion in each format
- Technical incidents and fallback options
- Closing the session and gathering participant feedback
Who is it for
Occasional trainers, internal trainers and subject-matter experts who deliver the same content both in the classroom and in a virtual classroom.
