Description

Workplace Mediation: De-escalating, Conducting the Meeting and Securing the Agreement

Regain control of a conflict between two employees before it paralyses the work of the whole team

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

An unaddressed disagreement turns into avoidance, then into opposing camps, then into incidents that end up on the HR director's desk. Each person waits for the other to give ground, the team takes sides and the work suffers, even though the two people concerned have often never had the opportunity to speak openly within a properly held framework.

These two days provide a method for intervening. You analyse the nature of the dispute, you decide whether the situation calls for mediation or for a management decision, you prepare the individual meetings with each party, then you conduct the joint session through to written commitments that are genuinely followed up.

Learning objectives

  • Analyse the nature of a dispute and its degree of escalation
  • Decide whether the situation calls for mediation or a management decision
  • Prepare and conduct the preliminary meetings with each party
  • Facilitate a mediation session while holding the agreed framework
  • Formalise the commitments made by the parties and organise their follow-up
  • Identify the situations that require handing the case over

What makes this programme different

A complete mediation is role-played across several sequences with the same characters from start to finish
Participants alternate between the roles of mediator and party in order to experience both positions
Handing over to an external third party is practised on situations that genuinely require it

Programme

1Understanding the dispute

Before intervening

  • Distinguishing a professional disagreement from a clash of personalities
  • Degrees of escalation and warning signs of deterioration
  • Effects of the conflict on the rest of the team
  • Situations that call for a formal internal process rather than mediation

2Setting the mediator's framework

Positioning and ground rules

  • Stated neutrality and the limits of an internal mediator
  • Confidentiality and what is reported to senior management
  • Obtaining the consent of both parties to the process
  • Practical arrangements for the session

3Conducting the meetings

Meeting each party, then bringing them together

  • Individual preliminary meeting and gathering the facts
  • Distinguishing between facts, interpretations and needs
  • Running the joint session and holding the framework
  • Managing emotional outbursts

4Closing and following up

From agreement to action

  • Wording precise and verifiable commitments
  • Written record and controlled circulation
  • Follow-up review at the agreed deadline
  • How to proceed when mediation fails

Who is it for

Managers, human resources professionals and employee representatives who are called upon to intervene in situations of interpersonal conflict at work.
