Description

Team Coaching: Contracting, Revealing Dynamics and Supporting the Collective

Support a team as a system rather than adding up a series of individual coaching sessions

  • 4 days — 28 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

A team that functions poorly is not a collection of individuals to be corrected. Tensions sit in unspoken rules, in the distribution of roles and in the team's own history. A coach used to one-to-one work quickly runs out of resources when facing a group that is watching itself and a manager expecting fast results.

Four days to acquire the specific reference points of team coaching: contracting with the manager and the group, running a shared diagnosis, facilitating sessions that genuinely shift relationships, and organising the exit from the engagement. Facilitation sequences are delivered in front of the full group and then analysed.

Learning objectives

  • Contract a team engagement with both the manager and the team
  • Conduct a shared diagnosis of how the team operates
  • Facilitate a team coaching session while managing airtime
  • Work on unspoken rules and the distribution of roles
  • Address tensions expressed in session without taking sides
  • Organise the close of the engagement and the handover to the manager

What makes this programme different

Facilitation sequences are delivered in front of the full group and then analysed
The manager's place in the engagement is examined at every stage
A complete team coaching engagement plan is built during the programme

Programme

1Contracting with the Collective

Several stakeholders, one single framework

  • Gathering the manager's request and the team's request
  • Clarifying the manager's place during the engagement
  • Defining the scope and what will remain confidential
  • Formalising the conditions for success with the team

2Diagnosing How the Team Operates

Making the collective visible to itself

  • Conducting preparatory one-to-one interviews
  • Identifying unspoken rules and avoided subjects
  • Analysing the distribution of roles and territories
  • Presenting the diagnosis without naming culprits

3Facilitating Team Sessions

Getting the group to work on itself

  • Opening a session and setting the working rules
  • Distributing airtime and handling those who dominate
  • Using formats that shift entrenched positions
  • Closing on decisions genuinely owned by the team

4Addressing Tensions

Welcoming conflict without fuelling it

  • Distinguishing interpersonal conflict from role conflict
  • Enabling disagreement to be voiced without personal attack
  • Handling an attack directed at the coach
  • Deciding when a subject should be dealt with outside the group

5Closing and Handing Over

Making the collective self-sufficient

  • Measuring the effects with the team and the manager
  • Transferring useful practices into day-to-day working
  • Scheduling a follow-up review point
  • Formalising the closing report for the sponsor
