Description

Managerial Delegation: Preparing, Assigning and Following Up on Tasks

Assign work without losing control of the outcome or discouraging the people involved

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

A manager who does not delegate ends up handling personally the files they should be overseeing. Days fill up with execution and leading the team always comes last. Conversely, a task assigned without a clear framework comes back late or incomplete, and the manager concludes it would have been faster to do it alone.

These two days focus on the practical mechanics of delegation. Participants learn to identify what can be handed over, then to articulate the expected outcome and set proportionate checkpoints. Handling gaps and shortfalls is practised on real situations brought by the group.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the activities within your remit that can be delegated
  • Select the right team member for each assignment
  • Frame a delegation by specifying the expected outcome and the room for manoeuvre
  • Set up follow-up checkpoints proportionate to the stakes
  • Address a gap or a delay without taking the assignment back

What makes this programme different

Each participant prepares two real delegations drawn from their own remit
An activity allocation grid completed during the session
Delegation conversations role-played in pairs, then reviewed for clarity of framing

Programme

1What Delegation Actually Covers

Distinguishing delegation from task allocation and workload shifting

  • The possible levels of autonomy on an assignment
  • What remains the manager's responsibility
  • Common barriers on the manager's side and the team member's side
  • The expected effects on workload and on skills

2Preparing the Delegation

Choosing the assignment, then the person

  • Mapping your activities to identify what can be handed over
  • Assessing the team member's actual level of autonomy
  • Considering the workload already carried by the intended person
  • Anticipating the access rights and resources required

3Conducting the Delegation Conversation

Articulating the expected outcome and the framework

  • Presenting the purpose of the assignment and its usefulness
  • Defining the expected outcome and its acceptance criteria
  • Setting decision limits and the time allocated
  • Agreeing on checkpoints and the escalation method

4Following Up and Addressing Gaps

Staying present without taking back control

  • Holding a short checkpoint focused on gaps
  • Responding to a delay without reclaiming the assignment
  • Adjusting the level of autonomy along the way
  • Closing the delegation and acknowledging the work delivered
