Description

Caring Leadership: Observing, Supporting and Protecting Your Team

Paying close attention to your team's working conditions without drifting into leniency or into a caregiving role

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

A manager picks up a great many weak signals. A team member who withdraws from the group, or unusual lateness from someone who has always been reliable. For lack of time or method, these signals are noted and then forgotten, until the situation ends in an extended absence or a resignation.

These two days in person address attention to people within the strict boundaries of the managerial role. Participants learn to assess actual workload, conduct a supportive conversation and direct people towards the right internal resources. The boundary with psychological support is set out from the opening session.

Learning objectives

  • Identify observable warning signs in day-to-day activity
  • Assess a team member's actual workload beyond the volume on paper
  • Conduct a supportive conversation while remaining within the managerial role
  • Direct a team member towards the right internal resources
  • Adjust work organisation to reduce an identified constraint

What makes this programme different

Work based on observable signals rather than on interpreting personalities
An explicit boundary between the managerial role and psychological support
Supportive conversations role-played and then reviewed for the wording that closes down dialogue

Programme

1Attention to the Work Itself

What care means within a managerial role

  • What falls to the manager and what falls to health professionals
  • The effects of managerial support on engagement
  • Common confusion with leniency
  • The confidentiality framework to set with your team

2Observing and Understanding Workload

Moving from impression to objective evidence

  • Distinguishing prescribed workload, actual workload and perceived workload
  • Spotting gaps between expected work and work actually performed
  • Identifying visible signals in day-to-day activity
  • Testing a hypothesis with the person before taking action

3Conducting a Supportive Conversation

Raising a sensitive situation without forcing it

  • Opening the conversation with facts rather than a diagnosis
  • Listening without seeking to resolve matters immediately
  • Putting forward a proposal to adjust the work
  • Closing the conversation with an agreed follow-up point

4Acting on Organisation and Signposting

Turning attention into concrete decisions

  • Adjusting the allocation of tasks after a warning signal
  • Knowing the internal resources available and when to call on them
  • Informing your own line management without breaching confidentiality
  • Sustaining workable conditions over the long term
