Description

Training Delivery: Designing Your Session, Facilitating and Assessing Learning

Design a training session and deliver it to a group while holding their attention throughout

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

A recognised subject-matter expert is asked to pass on their knowledge. They prepare a dense slide deck, talk at length, and notice that attention drops after an hour. Participants leave with notes but no clear idea of what to do with what they have heard.

Two days to build a session around learning objectives, select methods that put the group to work, and hold the room. Each participant facilitates in front of the group and receives structured feedback on their practice.

Learning objectives

  • Formulate observable learning objectives
  • Build a session outline with clear key moments
  • Select the learning method suited to each objective
  • Facilitate by alternating input, exercises and discussion
  • Assess learning at the end of a session and open and close a training day

What makes this programme different

Each participant facilitates two filmed sessions in front of the group
Feedback follows an observation grid shared at the opening of the programme
Everyone leaves with the session materials designed during the course

Programme

1Designing the session

Start from objectives, not from content

  • Formulate observable learning objectives
  • Break content down into short sequences
  • Build a progression from simple to complex
  • Plan time for exercises and consolidation

2Selecting your methods

Put the group to work rather than speaking alone

  • Distinguish presentation, questioning and active methods
  • Prepare an exercise that genuinely serves the objective
  • Use restrained visual materials
  • Adapt the method to the size of the group

3Facilitating in front of the group

Holding attention and pace

  • Open the session and set the ground rules
  • Work on voice, posture and use of the space
  • Re-engage the group through questioning
  • Manage time and transitions

4Assessing and closing

Checking what has actually been learned

  • Build a simple assessment of learning
  • Gather feedback that goes beyond first impressions
  • Close a day and prepare the next one
  • Prepare the transfer of learning to the workplace

Who is it for

Occasional trainers, subject-matter experts, workplace mentors and anyone required to facilitate training sessions.
