Description

Facilitation and Collective Intelligence: Framing, Running and Driving Group Decisions

Run meetings and workshops that produce a shared decision rather than a round-table discussion

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Collaborative workshops are multiplying, yet many end without a decision. Airtime is captured by a handful of participants and the ideas posted on the walls are never picked up again. The facilitator is left alone to carry the synthesis and the group leaves without any clear commitment.

These two days provide a facilitator stance and workshop formats that can be used immediately on return to work. Participants learn to frame a request before the workshop and then to select the sequence best suited to the intended objective. They practise regulating a difficult group and closing on decisions that are properly recorded.

Learning objectives

  • Clarify with the sponsor the objective and the expected deliverable of a workshop
  • Design a facilitation sequence suited to the type of output required
  • Run structured divergence and convergence formats
  • Regulate imbalances in airtime and tensions within the group
  • Close a workshop with decisions and commitments that are properly recorded

What makes this programme different

Each participant facilitates a real sequence in front of the group and receives feedback on their stance
The formats covered are selected according to the expected deliverable, not offered as a catalogue
Dedicated time is given to deadlock situations and to participants who withdraw or push back

Programme

1Framing before facilitating

The quality of a workshop is decided before anyone enters the room

  • Framing discussion with the sponsor
  • Distinguishing consultation, co-creation and decision
  • Selecting participants and their legitimacy on the topic
  • Wording the working question put to the group

2The facilitator's stance

Holding the process without holding the content

  • Neutrality on content and firmness on process
  • Wording instructions and managing time
  • Listening, reformulating and prompting without steering
  • Managing your own expertise on the subject under discussion

3Collective production formats

Choosing the sequence according to the intended deliverable

  • Alternating individual, sub-group and plenary time
  • Divergence formats to broaden the range of options
  • Convergence formats and prioritisation methods
  • Visual outputs that remain usable after the session

4Regulating and closing

Leaving the room with commitments

  • Handling dominant speakers and silent participants
  • Managing disagreement and power dynamics
  • Group decision-making and acceptable levels of agreement
  • Recording decisions and defining follow-up actions
