Description
Diversity, Disability and Cross-Cultural Issues: Analysing, Deciding and Resolving Workplace Situations
Two hours to handle workplace situations where disability, diversity and cultural practices collide with established habits
- 0.29 days — 2 h
- In-person or virtual
- Intermediate
- Up to 6 participants
A workstation adjustment perceived as unfair by the rest of the team. A request for time off linked to a religious practice. A repeated comment about someone's accent. These situations arise without warning, and the manager often decides alone and under pressure, at the risk of setting a questionable precedent or allowing a behaviour to take root.
This two-hour session is designed for professionals who already have a basic awareness of diversity and want greater confidence when dealing with concrete cases. The work is based entirely on real workplace situations. Each one is examined from three angles: the applicable rule, the fairness perceived by the team, and the response to be given in the short term.
Learning objectives
- Analyse a sensitive workplace situation before responding to it
- Distinguish a justified difference in treatment from a discriminatory practice
- Respond to a team that challenges an individual adjustment
- Address an inappropriate remark without dramatising it or letting it pass
- Identify situations that must be escalated to another point of contact
What makes this programme different
Programme
1Reading the situation
Before responding
- Describing the facts separately from their interpretation
- Identifying what relates to the work and what relates to the person
- Distinguishing between clumsiness, repeated behaviour and a serious incident
- Identifying everyone concerned, beyond the two people directly involved
2Adjustments and perceived fairness
The individual and the team
- The rationale behind a workstation adjustment and the limits of what can be granted
- Explaining the decision to the team without disclosing medical information
- Handling requests for similar arrangements from other employees
- Monitoring an adjustment over time
3Reacting in the moment
Remarks, practices and escalation
- Reacting immediately to an inappropriate remark made in a meeting
- Handling a request linked to a cultural or religious practice
- Restating the rules without stigmatising anyone
- Identifying situations to be passed on to the appropriate point of contact
Who is it for
Managers, diversity and disability focal points, HR professionals and employee representatives who face these situations.
Prerequisites
Prior attendance at a diversity awareness session, or experience in an HR or managerial role.
