Description

NLP Techniques: Reading Your Counterpart, Adjusting and Improving the Flow of Exchanges

Two days to observe what actually happens in a conversation and adjust the way you conduct it

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Two capable professionals leave the same meeting with two different accounts of it. One found the other closed off; the other found the first one pushy. The disagreement is not about substance but about the way each person frames and receives information. Without observation tools, the misunderstanding is simply put down to personality.

These 14 hours cover the communication tools drawn from neuro-linguistic programming and their professional use: calibrating your counterpart, pacing, precision questioning, reformulation and well-formed outcomes. Exercises are run in groups of three, with an observer who reports back on what was actually seen.

Learning objectives

  • Observe verbal and non-verbal signals without interpreting them immediately
  • Build trust by pacing your counterpart's rhythm and vocabulary
  • Question with precision to clarify a vague request
  • Reformulate what has been said while keeping the speaker's own words
  • Frame the objective of a conversation in concrete and verifiable terms
  • Adapt your language to your counterpart's dominant mode of expression

What makes this programme different

Exercises in groups of three with an observer who reports facts rather than impressions
Tools applied to real professional exchanges brought by participants
Precision questioning practice on deliberately vague requests

Programme

1Observing Before Interpreting

Calibration and frames of reference

  • Distinguishing what is observed from what is assumed
  • Spotting shifts in posture, voice and rhythm
  • Understanding each person's own frame of reference
  • Effects of premature interpretation on the rest of the exchange

2Establishing and Maintaining the Relationship

Pacing and adjustment

  • Pacing rhythm, tone and vocabulary
  • Recognising the moment when the relationship becomes tense
  • Adjusting your own behaviour to restore the exchange
  • Limits of pacing and the risk of visible mimicry

3Questioning and Reformulating

Precision in language

  • Identifying vague wording and generalisations
  • Precision questions on quantifiers and unspoken assumptions
  • Reformulation that checks understanding without taking over
  • Guiding an exchange towards a clearly stated request

4Steering an Exchange Towards an Outcome

Objectives and professional applications

  • Framing the objective of a conversation in concrete terms
  • Preparing a difficult exchange with a target outcome
  • Applying the tools to briefings, follow-up meetings and internal negotiation
  • Identifying your own communication habits

Who is it for
