Description

Investment Fund Accounting: Recording, Valuing and Controlling Net Asset Value

Master the bookkeeping and valuation specific to funds in order to produce a reliable net asset value

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Accounting for collective investment funds follows a logic of its own, quite distinct from that of trading companies: profit is not the central indicator and everything converges towards the net asset value. Teams coming from general accounting often struggle with the treatment of subscriptions and redemptions, accrued coupons and fees charged on an ongoing basis.

These two days cover the full mechanics: fund-specific chart of accounts, recording of portfolio transactions, unit movements, valuation of instruments and control of the net asset value. Exercises are based on real journal entry patterns and on the checks expected before the NAV is released.

Learning objectives

  • Position the accounting framework specific to collective investment funds
  • Record portfolio transactions and corporate actions
  • Process unit subscriptions and redemptions and their impact on net assets
  • Value the instruments held and calculate accrued income
  • Produce the net asset value and carry out consistency checks before release

What makes this programme different

Journal entry patterns are worked through on a single case-study fund followed across the two days
The net asset value calculation is rebuilt step by step and then tested against a set of anomalies
Cases cover both an equity fund and a bond fund
