Description

Theatre Techniques: Stepping Forward, Owning the Space and Building Assurance

Three days of stage-based exercises to move past apprehension and speak with ease in front of a group

  • 3 days — 21 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Some professionals know their subject inside out yet freeze the moment a group turns towards them: shallow breathing, rushed delivery, the urge to cut things short. Theory-based advice on public speaking rarely resolves this, because the blockage sits in the body and in the relationship to other people's gaze.

This 21-hour intermediate programme borrows its exercises from the actor's craft. Over three days participants work on breathing, voice, eye contact and then improvisation, in a progression where getting it wrong is part of the exercise. Each sequence closes with the transfer of the techniques to a specific workplace situation.

Learning objectives

  • Use breathing to steady your voice before speaking
  • Own the space and hold the gaze of an audience
  • Improvise a short intervention without a written script
  • Vary pace and intention to sustain attention
  • Transfer a stage exercise to a specific workplace situation

What makes this programme different

A progression built on short exercises that avoids abrupt exposure in front of the group
Physical and vocal preparation before every speaking sequence
Every exercise ends with its transfer to a real work situation
