Description
Action Plans: Structuring, Assigning and Tracking Through to Completion
Turn a list of good intentions into a dated action plan that is properly assigned and genuinely tracked over time
- 0.43 days — 3 h
- In-person or virtual
- Foundation
- Up to 6 participants
At the end of a meeting, decisions are made and minuted. Three weeks later, no one knows the status of the actions, who was meant to take them forward or what is blocking progress. The plan exists on paper but no longer drives anything at all.
Three hours to build a workable action plan: a clearly stated objective, actions broken down, named owners, realistic deadlines and scheduled review points. You work on a live project that you bring to the session.
Learning objectives
- Turn a collective decision into a verifiable objective
- Break an objective down into individually assignable actions
- Set realistic deadlines and control milestones
- Organise tracking and the handling of overdue actions
What makes this programme different
Programme
1From Decision to Objective
Knowing precisely what you want to achieve
- Restate a decision as an expected outcome
- Define the criterion that will confirm completion
- Set the scope and the resources available
- Spot objectives that are too vague to be tracked
2Breaking Down and Assigning
One action, one owner, one date
- Break the objective down into concrete actions
- Name a single owner for each action
- Estimate the workload and set an achievable deadline
- Identify dependencies between actions
3Tracking and Correcting
A plan lives or dies by its follow-up
- Choose a tracking format that is readable in meetings
- Set the frequency of progress reviews
- Address delays without looking for someone to blame
- Close out the plan and capture lessons learned
Who is it for
Project managers and line managers, together with focal points responsible for taking collective decisions through to completion.
