Description
Agile Innovation Projects: Test an Idea, Iterate and Decide What Comes Next
Progressing through successive experiments when neither the need nor the solution is known at the outset
- 0.21 days — 1.5 h
- In-person or virtual
- All levels
- Up to 6 participants
An innovation project cannot be planned like a roll-out. Neither the need nor the solution is stable at the start, and committing to a delivery date is little more than a gamble. Teams hesitate between freezing a specification document to reassure senior management and moving forward with no markers anyone can see.
Ninety minutes online to put the essential markers in place. A hypothesis is formulated, then tested on a small scale before the decision is taken to continue or stop. This very short format provides a starting method and does not replace a full agile project management programme.
Learning objectives
- Formulate the core hypothesis of an innovation project
- Design a small-scale test to challenge it
- Define the criteria for deciding to continue or stop
- Organise the work in short iterations
What makes this programme different
Programme
1Uncertainty and hypotheses
Naming what you do not know
- Distinguish what is a hypothesis from what is a fact
- Formulate the riskiest hypothesis
- Identify the unknowns in the need and in the solution
- Let go of the fixed specification document
2Testing on a small scale
Learning quickly and at low cost
- Design a test proportionate to the hypothesis
- Choose what will be observed
- Build a minimal version in order to learn
- Gather feedback you can actually use
3Deciding and iterating
Continue, adjust or stop
- Analyse the results of the test
- Decide whether to continue, adjust or stop
- Run short iterations one after another
- Report on progress without a firm delivery date
Who is it for
Innovation project owners, innovation leads and teams working on a need that is still poorly defined.
