Description

AI for Public Services: Identifying, Assessing and Prioritising Use Cases

Be able to state, before buying any tool, which public service needs artificial intelligence genuinely addresses

  • 0.14 days — 1 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Departments within a government entity hear a great deal about artificial intelligence without knowing where it would actually be useful. Approaches from software vendors keep multiplying and pilot initiatives remain isolated. Nothing confirms whether the need identified truly calls for AI or simply for better organisation of existing data. Yet decision-makers expect answers on very concrete matters of resident services and asset management.

This session offers a structured reading of the subject. It reviews the main families of needs within a public authority and shows under what conditions AI responds to them usefully. It provides a few simple criteria for screening a use-case idea before committing resources.

Learning objectives

  • Position what artificial intelligence covers in relation to the digital tools already deployed
  • Identify the families of public service needs that can realistically be addressed by AI
  • Distinguish a genuinely relevant use case from a communication exercise
  • Apply a simple screening grid to a use-case idea before any commitment of resources

What makes this programme different

Use cases are presented by public service remit rather than by technology
A four-question screening grid helps discard ideas that have not been properly examined
Data availability conditions are established before any tool is promised

Programme

1What AI actually changes in public services

Setting the vocabulary before opening the debate

  • The difference between automation, data processing and artificial intelligence
  • What a tool learns and what it merely reproduces
  • Minimum data conditions required to expect a useful result
  • What AI cannot decide in place of a public officer

2A review of public service challenges

Connecting real needs to possible use cases

  • Resident services and the handling of recurring requests
  • Asset maintenance and anticipation of interventions
  • Mobility and traffic flow regulation
  • Energy efficiency of public buildings
  • Support for case and application processing by departments

3Screening an idea before committing resources

A decision grid rather than yet another pilot

  • Four questions to ask before launching a project
  • Assessment of the real workload for the officers concerned
  • The place of the officer in the final decision
  • Points of vigilance on personal data and transparency

Who is it for

Elected officials and directors general of services as well as department heads and digital transformation officers within government entities and municipalities.
