Description

Consolidation for Tax Professionals: Reading, Adjusting and Using Group Accounts

Decode consolidated financial statements and locate the information a tax professional actually needs

  • 1 day — 7 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Tax professionals regularly consult consolidated financial statements without understanding how they are built. They look for a tax charge, a carried-forward loss, the carrying value of a subsidiary or the result of a given jurisdiction, and come up against adjustments whose origin escapes them. Dialogue with the consolidation team quickly becomes laborious.

This one-day programme explains the mechanics of consolidation from the perspective of those who have to use it: scope and methods, alignment adjustments, intragroup eliminations, goodwill and, above all, the treatment of current and deferred tax. Exercises are based on real anonymised consolidation reporting packages.

Learning objectives

  • Identify the consolidation scope and the method applied to each entity
  • Explain the effect of alignment adjustments on consolidated profit
  • Trace the origin of intragroup transaction eliminations
  • Analyse the consolidated tax charge and the tax proof
  • Justify deferred tax arising from temporary differences

What makes this programme different

Exercises are based on anonymised consolidation packages rather than theoretical cases
The tax proof is broken down line by line through to its residual difference
A translation glossary between consolidation vocabulary and tax vocabulary is built during the session
