Description
Constructive Feedback: Preparing, Delivering and Following Up
One day to raise what is not working without damaging the relationship, and to acknowledge what is
- 1 day — 7 h
- In-person or virtual
- Foundation
- Up to 6 participants
The difficult conversation is postponed week after week, then finally delivered on a day of fatigue. The wording drifts towards the person and the exchange ends in self-justification. Conversely, good work goes unmentioned because it is simply expected.
One day to establish a regular and sustainable feedback practice. You will learn to separate facts from interpretations, to lead a feedback conversation through to a dated commitment, and to receive criticism without becoming defensive. Each participant prepares the specific feedback conversation they need to hold on returning to work.
Learning objectives
- Distinguish feedback from the annual appraisal and from off-the-cuff remarks
- Prepare feedback grounded in observable facts
- Formulate corrective feedback without passing judgement on the person
- Lead a feedback conversation through to a dated commitment
- Receive critical feedback without justifying yourself
What makes this programme different
Programme
1What Makes Feedback Acceptable
Facts rather than impressions
- The difference between an observable fact, an interpretation and a judgement
- Choosing the time and place according to the nature of the feedback
- Frequency of feedback and the effect of prolonged managerial silence
- Common missteps that close down the listener
2Leading the Feedback Conversation
From observation to commitment
- Opening the discussion and stating its purpose
- Describing the facts and their concrete consequences
- Listening to the team member's account and taking their constraints into account
- Formulating a precise request with a clear deadline
- Written record and follow-up point
3Positive Feedback and Receiving Feedback
Recognising and accepting
- Specific recognition of work delivered rather than a general compliment
- Adapting feedback for team members who play down their achievements
- Receiving criticism without immediate justification
- Requesting feedback from your team and from your own line manager
Who is it for
Front-line managers and team leaders, as well as project managers who need to develop team members without direct reporting authority.
