Description

CSR for Small and Medium Enterprises: Prioritising Actions, Engaging the Team and Demonstrating Progress

Launching a genuinely useful CSR approach in an organisation with no dedicated function and no ring-fenced budget

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

In a small or medium-sized company, CSR has neither a dedicated team nor a budget line. It rests on the owner or managing director and on a few volunteers who add the subject to their existing workload. Yet the requests keep coming, from clients and from funding partners alike. Copying the approach of a large group leads straight to abandonment.

This two-day programme sets out an approach scaled to smaller organisations: rapid self-assessment, selection of a limited number of workstreams, actions achievable with existing resources, allocation of roles and the assembly of the evidence clients expect. Available time remains the guiding constraint throughout.

Learning objectives

  • Carry out a CSR self-assessment proportionate to the size of the organisation
  • Select a limited number of workstreams with high impact and low cost
  • Implement actions that are achievable with existing resources
  • Respond to CSR questionnaires from clients and funding partners
  • Gather evidence and communicate without overstating results

What makes this programme different

Self-assessment completed during the session on your own organisation
Responses built from client questionnaires actually received by participants
Action plan calibrated to the time available rather than to a large-group template

Programme

1Establishing Your Starting Point

A proportionate diagnosis

  • Self-assessment covering social, environmental and governance practices
  • Review of what is already done without being labelled CSR
  • Identification of client and funding partner expectations
  • Realistic estimate of the time available for the initiative

2Choosing Your Workstreams

A few subjects handled well

  • Selection criteria based on expected impact, cost and workload
  • Accessible workstreams covering energy, waste and procurement
  • Social workstreams covering working conditions and skills
  • Governance workstreams covering ethics and supplier relations
  • Deliberately setting aside subjects beyond reach

3Implementing with Existing Resources

Working with what you have

  • Allocation of roles between the managing director and volunteer employees
  • Actions achievable without heavy investment
  • Engaging teams and addressing resistance
  • Drawing on external support and available assistance schemes
  • Simple tracking of the actions launched

4Evidencing and Showcasing

Responding without overstating

  • Evidence to retain for each action undertaken
  • Responding to CSR questionnaires from clients and principal contractors
  • Preparing for an external assessment
  • Measured communication towards clients and candidates
  • Risks associated with unsubstantiated claims

Who is it for

Owners and managing directors of small and medium-sized enterprises, administration managers, human resources managers and employees appointed as CSR focal points.
