Description
Dashboards: Selecting Indicators, Designing the Layout and Leading Performance Reviews
Replace a report nobody reads with a handful of indicators that actually trigger decisions
- 2 days — 14 h
- In-person or virtual
- Foundation
- Up to 6 participants
Most departments already have a dashboard: fifteen tabs, dozens of figures, late distribution and not a single decision at the end of it. Indicators are often chosen because the data happened to be available, not because they shed light on an action. The result: the management controller spends the week producing figures that operational teams either challenge or ignore.
Two days to start again from the objectives of the activity and build a dashboard that is genuinely used. Each participant selects their indicators, connects them to their data sources and designs the layout of the document they will present to their committee.
Learning objectives
- Link the selected indicators to the objectives and performance drivers of the activity
- Build an indicator with its definition, source and reporting frequency
- Select the visual representations best suited to each message
- Organise data collection and data reliability checks
- Lead a performance review based on the dashboard
What makes this programme different
Programme
1From Objectives to Indicators
Measuring what can actually be managed
- Translate the objectives of the activity into management questions
- Distinguish outcome indicators from action indicators
- Discard indicators that nobody is able to influence
- Limit the number of indicators at each level of responsibility
2Building and Documenting the Indicator
A figure that is no longer disputed
- Write the specification sheet of an indicator with its calculation formula
- Identify the data source and the person accountable for it
- Set the reporting frequency and the availability deadline
- Define alert thresholds and commentary rules
3Layout and Visual Representation
Making the message readable at a glance
- Structure the document according to the reader's level of detail
- Choose the right chart for a trend, a breakdown or a variance
- Write a short comment that explains the variation
- Avoid visual effects that distort interpretation
4Production and Facilitation
Keeping the dashboard alive over time
- Organise data collection and consistency checks before distribution
- Hold the production schedule of the dashboard
- Lead the performance review and formalise the decisions taken
- Adjust the indicators when the activity changes
Who is it for
Management controllers, finance managers and operational managers responsible for producing or using a business dashboard.
