Description

Data Storytelling: Structuring the Message, Visualising and Convincing

Turning a sound but unreadable analysis into a demonstration that drives the decision

  • 0.43 days — 3 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

The analysis is solid, yet the meeting ends without a decision. The table on screen holds too many figures, the chart chosen does not serve the point, and the conclusion arrives on the final slide once attention has already drifted. Careful analytical work is lost for want of a narrative.

This short virtual session works the other way round. Participants start from the message and the decision expected, select the representation that serves that message, strip out what clutters it, then build a flow and a delivery that take predictable objections into account.

Learning objectives

  • Express the core message of an analysis in one actionable sentence
  • Match the level of detail to the remit and concerns of the audience
  • Select the chart type that supports the demonstration
  • Strip a visual of every element that adds no meaning
  • Build a presentation flow and anticipate objections

What makes this programme different

Each participant rewrites the central message of one of their own dashboards
Charts brought to the session are rebuilt and compared for immediate readability
The final presentation is delivered to an audience that challenges the results

Programme

1Message and Audience

Starting from the decision expected

  • Expressing the core message in a single sentence
  • Identifying the decision the presentation must enable
  • Matching the level of detail to the audience's remit
  • Separating what is demonstrated from what remains a hypothesis

2Visualisation That Serves the Point

Choosing the form that demonstrates

  • Matching the type of question to the type of chart
  • Scales, axes and honest comparisons
  • Removing decorative elements and visual noise
  • Using colour to signal what matters
  • Highlighting the gap rather than the level

3Narrative and Delivery

Leading the audience to the decision

  • Building a flow from findings through to recommendation
  • Stating the conclusion from the opening
  • Handling objections and requests for detail
  • Dealing with uncertain figures and the limits of the analysis

Who is it for
