Description

Data Warehouse: Modelling, Loading and Using Your Management Data

Move beyond scattered spreadsheets and build a data warehouse that genuinely supports decision-making

  • 1 day — 7 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Intermediate
  • Up to 6 participants

Every department produces its own figures. Monthly revenue does not carry the same value depending on whether it comes from the sales system or from the accounting ledger, extracts are rebuilt by hand every month and nobody can retrieve the exact definition of an indicator. Management meetings are spent debating the data rather than making decisions.

This seven-hour programme lays the foundations of a data warehouse. Participants learn to distinguish transactional from analytical uses, to build a star schema for an analysis domain, to organise loading pipelines and to secure the quality and traceability of the figures delivered to business users.

Learning objectives

  • Distinguish transactional from analytical uses of a database
  • Model an analysis domain into fact and dimension tables
  • Define data granularity and historisation rules
  • Organise a loading pipeline and its scheduling
  • Control the quality and traceability of the data delivered

What makes this programme different

The modelling work is built on a business domain brought by the participants
The comparison between warehouse, data lake and direct reporting is settled through clear usage criteria
Historisation pitfalls are addressed through real cases of dimensions that change over time

Programme

1Foundations of a Data Warehouse

Separating operations from decision-making

  • Differences between transactional and analytical systems
  • The respective roles of the warehouse, the data lake and reporting layers
  • Staging and delivery zones
  • Choosing between batch processing and more frequent loading

2Dimensional Modelling

Building a schema business users can read

  • Fact tables and dimension tables
  • Choosing the granularity of a fact table
  • Managing dimensions that change over time
  • Conformed dimensions shared across several domains
  • Shared definition of indicators and calculation rules

3Loading, Quality and Operations

Keeping the pipeline running day to day

  • Extraction, transformation and loading stages
  • Scheduling jobs and managing restarts
  • Quality and consistency controls on loads
  • Documenting flows and tracking data lineage
  • Organising access rights and permissions
