Description

Decision-Making: Framing the Problem, Making the Call and Owning It

Decide under uncertainty without postponing the call or falling into your own reflexes

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Some decisions drag on for weeks: another analysis is requested, one more stakeholder is consulted, and everyone waits for information that never arrives. Others are made far too quickly, on a simple impression. In both cases the cost is real: missed opportunities, teams left waiting and trade-offs that keep coming back to the table.

Two days to structure the way you decide: framing the real problem, building genuinely different options, setting your criteria before comparing, spotting your biases and owning the decision in front of the people concerned. The methods are applied to live decisions brought by participants.

Learning objectives

  • Frame the problem to be addressed before looking for solutions
  • Build genuinely distinct options rather than variations on a single idea
  • Compare options using weighted criteria
  • Identify the biases that distort your judgement
  • Announce and own a decision in front of stakeholders

What makes this programme different

Each participant works on a decision they actually have to make
Short exercises that reveal your own biases
A decision-support grid usable alone or with a team

Programme

1Framing the Problem

Deciding on what, exactly

  • Distinguishing the symptom from the real problem
  • Formulating the question to be settled in one sentence
  • Identifying who decides, who is consulted and who is informed
  • Setting the deadline and the sufficient level of information
  • Spotting decisions that do not need to be made at all

2Building the Options

Moving beyond binary choices

  • Widening the field beyond two solutions
  • Seeking the missing information that is genuinely useful
  • Assessing the consequences of each option
  • Estimating risks and points of no return
  • Examining the option of changing nothing

3Making the Call

Criteria before comparison

  • Defining and weighting your criteria before examining the options
  • Comparing options using a decision grid
  • Spotting common biases such as anchoring or confirmation seeking
  • Deciding with incomplete information
  • Setting the conditions for reversing a decision

4Announcing and Following Up

The decision begins when it is announced

  • Explaining the decision and the criteria applied
  • Handling objections without reopening the trade-off
  • Involving the people concerned in implementation
  • Defining follow-up indicators
  • Revising a decision without losing credibility
