Description

Delegation: Choosing What to Hand Over, Framing the Assignment and Following Up Without Taking It Back

Two days to hand over genuine assignments without losing control of the expected outcome

  • 2 days — 14 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

A manager who does not delegate ends up handling work the team could carry out. A manager who delegates poorly takes the file back halfway through and discourages the person it was entrusted to. Between the two, weak framing explains most delegations that fail.

These two days address what can be delegated, how to frame the assignment and how to follow up. You will prepare the delegation of a real assignment, then conduct the delegation meeting in front of the group before defining your own checkpoints.

Learning objectives

  • Distinguish delegation from the simple allocation of tasks
  • Select assignments that can be delegated in light of your own priorities
  • Frame a delegation by specifying the expected outcome and the scope for initiative
  • Conduct a delegation meeting with a team member
  • Organise follow-up that raises alerts without taking back control

What makes this programme different

Programme

1What Can and Cannot Be Delegated

Sorting through your own workload

  • Inventory of your activities and identification of available scope
  • Criteria for selecting an assignment that can be delegated
  • Responsibilities that remain with the manager
  • Personal barriers to delegation

2Choosing the Right Person and the Right Level

Delegating is not letting go

  • Assessing the team member's competence and motivation
  • Levels of autonomy granted according to the situation
  • Acceptable risks and the right to make mistakes
  • Adjusting the level during the assignment

3Conducting the Delegation Meeting

A clear agreement is worth more than a written message

  • Presenting the purpose and the stakes of the assignment
  • Stating the expected outcome and the resources allocated
  • Jointly defining checkpoints
  • Confirming the team member's agreement

4Following Up Without Taking Back Control

Staying informed without monitoring

  • Frequency and content of checkpoints
  • Responding to a deviation or a delay
  • Situations that justify taking the assignment back
  • Reviewing the delegation and recognising the work done

Who is it for

Team managers and project managers who wish to entrust more assignments to their team members.
