Description
Designing a Training Programme: Scoping, Framing and Sequencing
Two days to build a training programme that holds together from the first objective to the last
- 2 days — 14 h
- In-person or virtual
- Foundation
- Up to 6 participants
Many programmes are written backwards. Designers start from the content they know well and only afterwards look for objectives that might match it. The consequences show up in the training room: sequences that run far too long, decorative activities and a final assessment that measures nothing in particular.
These 14 hours focus exclusively on design. Participants start from the request and the target audience in order to frame objectives that can genuinely be assessed. They then build a learning progression, select the methods that serve each objective and write a session plan that another trainer could actually deliver. Assessment is designed alongside the programme rather than bolted on at the end.
Learning objectives
- Analyse a training request and define the profile of the target audience
- Frame learning objectives that are observable and measurable
- Build a learning progression consistent with the time available
- Select for each sequence the method best suited to the intended objective
- Write a session plan that another trainer can use
What makes this programme different
Programme
1Analysing the Request and the Audience
Knowing who you are designing for
- Information to gather from the sponsor
- Profiling the audience and its starting level
- Constraints of duration, venue and organisation
- Restating the need before writing the first line
2Framing Learning Objectives
What the participant will be able to do
- The difference between a topic covered and a learning objective
- Verbs that make an objective observable
- Levels of expectation according to audience and duration
- Structuring the overall objective and intermediate objectives
3Progression and Methods
Sequencing what actually creates learning
- Ordering sequences and the logic of progression
- Overview of training methods and when to use each
- Alternating formats across a full day
- Balancing input and practice according to the objective
4Session Plan and Assessment Design
Making the programme usable
- Structure of a detailed session plan
- Timings, materials and instructions to include
- Designing the methods used to assess learning
- Documents provided to participants and to the sponsor
Who is it for
Internal trainers, instructional designers and learning and development managers responsible for writing or revising training programmes.
