Description
Infographics: Structuring Information, Choosing Visuals and Composing a Page
Three hours to turn a string of figures into a visual that is understood at a glance
- 0.43 days — 3 h
- In-person or virtual
- Foundation
- Up to 6 participants
You are asked to make a set of results readable for people who will never open the attached spreadsheet. Without any design background, the instinct is to pile up colours, boxes and icons. The result fills the page, but no one knows where to start reading or what message to take away.
These 3 hours establish the method that comes before the tool. Each participant defines the single message of their visual, structures the information in levels of reading, selects a graphic form suited to their data, then composes and exports an infographic based on their own figures.
Learning objectives
- Identify the single message a visual must carry
- Structure the information in an infographic into clear levels of reading
- Select a graphic representation suited to the nature of the data
- Compose a page using alignment, contrast and white space
- Export a visual in a format suited to its distribution channel
