Description

Letting Go at Work: Spotting Tension, Sorting Priorities and Releasing Control

A one-day programme to identify what you are trying to control at work and learn how to let go

  • 1 day — 7 h
  • In-person or virtual
  • Foundation
  • Up to 6 participants

Re-reading a document three times after it has already been approved. Redoing a colleague's work instead of handing it back. Replaying a meeting in your head all weekend. The need to control everything feels reassuring in the moment, then becomes expensive: accumulated fatigue, and friction with the people you work with.

This 7-hour programme does not ask anyone to lower their standards. It offers a clear method for separating what genuinely depends on you from what does not. Participants identify their own triggers, then practise short regulation techniques. They finish by selecting two situations in which to release control as a priority.

Learning objectives

  • Distinguish, in a real situation, what depends on you from what does not
  • Identify your over-control triggers and the physical signals that accompany them
  • Practise three regulation techniques that can be used in a few minutes
  • Reframe a personal standard as an expected and achievable quality level
  • Select two work situations in which to release control

What makes this programme different

Work based on real situations described by the participants themselves
Three regulation techniques practised in the session, not merely described
A written commitment covering two situations to change within the month

Programme

1Understanding your need for control

What it protects and what it costs

  • Describing three situations in which control took over
  • Identifying triggers and the thoughts attached to them
  • Physical signals that announce rising tension
  • Assessing the cost in time and in working relationships

2Sorting what depends on you

Zone of action and zone of acceptance

  • Sorting a situation into controllable elements and elements you simply face
  • Reframing a personal standard as an expected quality level
  • Criteria for deciding when to stop working on a file
  • The place of delegation in releasing control

3Embedding release practices

Short, repeatable techniques

  • Three-minute guided breathing
  • Creating distance by writing down a concern
  • Attention anchoring before a high-exposure meeting
  • Selecting two priority situations and committing to action
